19th Century Late. Red Wool Smoking Suit Trimmed With Cord, England.
Wool, faced with silk, lined with wool, trimmed with silk cord. Worn by men whilst smoking after dinner. Informal evening wear for relaxing at home, usually made of wool or velvet in adventurous colors, such as red, blue and green, with contrasting, often quilted, lapels and cuffs, and cord trimming. Frogged fastenings gave a slightly exotic feeling, as did decorated tasseled smoking caps frequently worn with them. via John Bright Collection, U.K.19th Century Late.
