18th Century Late Aubergine Wool Stays. White kid leather trim and edge binding, double layer heavy homespun linen lining, completely channel-sewn with 0.25″ bones throughout, centre back lacing, hand stitched.
Stays were associated with respectability and high social status and therefore seen as a necessary garment for all respectable women. There was also an erotic dimension to completing your toilette, which included donning a corset, so in some places e.g. France, the performance of dressing and undressing became semi-public.
