1876 Burgundy Silk Corset. Silk, cotton, metal, and bone. Worcester Corset Company (American, 1872–1901) This Bon Ton corset was awarded the bronze medal at the Centennial Exposition. The fine embroidery of traditional motifs of oak leaves and wheat ears symbolize well-being and prosperity. During the 1870s, a woman’s dress and fashion represented her class, so these motifs on an undergarment showed her status as a wealthy and upper class woman.
